Kingston Ridge

[object Object]

Kingston Ridge Scout Campsite is just shy of 8 acres of fields and woodland, owned and managed by Basildon District Scouts.  It is situated in the Langdon Hills area on the outskirts of Basildon in Essex, in a very quiet and rural setting.  The surrounding open countryside and woodlands belong to Essex Wildlife Trust.

Over the past couple of years it has been quietly and carefully redeveloped.  A casual glance will suggest that nothing much has changed but look closer and you will find that there has been an enormous amount of work undertaken to greatly improve the facilities and resources of this lovely site.

Significant development work has taken place in a thoughtful and sensitive manner so as not to spoil the area. This means that we will have, from this season, resources and facilities to match the best sites. Yet one of the best features of this site is it’s unspoiled nature.  A lovely little oasis of peace and tranquility just two miles by road from the centre of one of the biggest towns in Essex.

Main Camping Field
A gently slopping field with four fire bases, three water standpipes and two electric points.  This is the site used for Troop/Pack camps.  Caravans are only allowed at the lower end of the field.

Family Field
A gently slopping field leading to a flat area. This Field has 4 fire bases (two raised), two water and two electric points.  The toilet block is located in this field. New for 2007, there will be a second toilet and shower block. This is the area usually used for caravans.

Sports Field
This is a large flat field that is mainly used for sport/activities and games. It has two water points. Although this is not usually used as a camping field, it can be if required.

Backwoods Camping Area
Located above the sports field is an area that is ideal for backwoods camping.

Patrol Sites
There are also two smaller sites that are ideal for smaller camps. Both have places for open fires.

Adventure Play Area
Locate above the sports field is an adventure play area (assault course).  Some obstacles have to be assembled before use.

Campfire Circle

Shooting Range
Purpose built for air rifle shooting, with covered shelter from which to shoot, and a waiting area behind for those in the queue.

Ariel Runway
There is the facility to put up a large Ariel runway (zip wire) in the Sports Field.

Pioneering Equipment
A limited supply of equipment is available

Climbing Wall
It is a 43' tower with two climbing walls and an abseil wall, also with integral chimney simulator.  Alongside is a traverse wall. This is a monster of a climbing wall - rock solid in use but not for the faint-hearted! It is not yet ready for active service but all of the major work is now completed.

Electricity supply
The site is not connected to the mains electricity supply.  All electricity is supplied via an on-site 38kVA generator.  Electricity points are being made available to most of the site, these will only be functional when the generator is in operation. There is an additional charge for use of the generator.

Also available are ladies and gents flush loos, and showers with hot water.

Local offsite activities

It is just a short drive to Basildon Town Centre and Laindon where there are shops and railway links to London and Southend.

Swimming facilities and other leisure resources are available at Basildon Town Centre.  Westley Heights Country Park is just a short walk from the campsite.
